The Sweetest Thing is the perfect example of how you can’t judge a book by it’s cover. I’ll admit, when my wife first picked it out I was thinking the worst. I thought it was just going to be another sappy chick-flick, but boy was I ever wrong. Christina Walters (Cameron Diaz) is a fun loving party girl that seems to always have the upper hand with the guys she dates. Her friends Courtney (Christina Applegate) and Jane (Selma Blair) also love living it up with Christina, but both are going through relationship and dating issues themselves. One night at the club, Christina meets a great guy that she’s really into and can’t stop thinking about. Courtney finally convinces her to let her guard down and go after him. The journey to her dream guy is full of hilarious events and situations.
The three lead females really command the screen. Applegate really shines in this comedic role, and Blair’s innocent appearance really makes her character believable. This movie is filled with many hilarious one-liners, and takes full advantage of it’s R rating. The mix of the storyline with random acts of comedy is fairly smooth, and works well since the comedy is actually funny. As with most romantic comedies there are some cheesy moments, but The Sweetest Thing really does a great job in this aspect, as any cheesy moments are integrated with a dose of comedy to remind you that you’re not watching a tear-jerker. While I’m not a big fan of Cameron Diaz in a leading role, her fun quirkiness really works in this film.
At first glance (and by first glance I mean the DVD cover), The Sweetest Thing looks like your classic chick-flick but it’s far from it. This movie is laugh out loud funny, and not just for the ladies. It’s as funny to men as it is to women, and is a blast to watch for anyone. As a date movie, The Sweetest Thing works because it will keep you both laughing the entire time almost guaranteeing a great time. The underlying love story centers around dating and new found love, so it’s great for those that have just started in their dating and/or relationship. Overall this is a hilarious movie that everyone should watch at least once.
