Just Friends is a fun movies that you can watch just about anytime. It’s one of those movies that your guy will act like he hates but secretly likes! Chris Brander (Ryan Reynolds) is a chubby New Jersey high schooler who’s in love with his best friend Jamie (Amy Smart). When it comes to Jamie, Chris is in the “friend zone” because she doesn’t have the same type of feelings for him. After an embarrassing yearbook incident Chris flees New Jersey and vows to make something of himself. Years later, Chris finds himself in Los Angeles as a slimmed down music business playboy, giving his friends advice on how to stay out of the “friend zone”. While on a trip to sign the hot pop starlet Samantha James (Anna Faris), Chris finds himself stranded in New Jersey for the first time since he left years ago.
First of all, Just Friends is not going to blow your mind with a super original story or unbelievable direction. While we’ve seen these types of movies before, Just Friends has a lot of good qualities that makes it an entertaining watch. Ryan Reynolds is an acquired comedic taste, but personally I like his dry (and sometimes overly silly) style of humor. His chemistry with Smart is good, and the love triangle with Dusty (Chris Kline) shows of a good trio of popular young comedic actors. There are a lot of laughs all over the film and his relationships with his brother and Samantha showcase some of the funniest moments in the film. The movie is full of one-liners that you will remember for a long time, and can keep you and your friends cracking up days later. The plot is cheesy at times and the situations overly ridiculous at some points, but that’s to be expected in this genre.
Just Friends is set around Christmas time, so while the setting may not fit for any occasion, the amount of funny parts in the film make it fun to watch just about anytime. As a date movie, Just Friends is a light-hearted film that is fun for just about any couple, and it makes for a good choice. The theme of wanting to be more than friends will resonate with a lot of people, as we’ve all probably been there at some point in our lives. Overall, Reynold’s dry sense of humor coupled with the comedic talents of the rest of the cast make Just Friends a movie that you (and your date) will enjoy watching.
