Hitch is really a great romantic comedy that excels in many areas, especially with its all-star cast and undeniable charm. Alex Hitchens (Will Smith) or “Hitch” is a super-smooth matchmaker that helps ordinary guys get the women of their dreams. As New York City’s date doctor, Hitch is somewhat of an urban myth as he works only by referral and only to help guys that truly like and care about the women they are pursuing. While helping his newest client Albert Brennaman (Kevin James) woo big-time celebrity Allegra Cole (Amber Valleta), Hitch finds himself smitten (and not so calm and collected mind you) with local gossip columnist Sara Melas (Eva Mendes). Melas is constantly looking for the scoop on Allegra’s love life, and conflict ensues when the connection between Hitchens and Brennaman is revealed.

The cast really drives the movie as Smith and Mendes both have a certain likability and it holds true in the film. James steals the scene numerous times, and is the main catalyst for some of the funniest parts in the movie. His chemistry with Valleta is really good, and they arguably make the cutest couple in whole film. The writing is solid but cheesy at times, which holds true for just about any romantic comedy. However, the combination of witty dialogue and smooth direction gives the film a cool edge to it, which makes the viewer feel more hip for watching. The modern soundtrack completes the package providing a jazzy neo-soul atmosphere, which fits perfectly with all the other aspects of the film.

Andy Tennant’s Hitch is a smart romantic comedy with a great cast, solid dialogue, and a great soundtrack all wrapped up in a fun package. As you can tell by our rating, it’s a can’t miss date movie, and works with any date night situation (ie, first date, married night out, etc). Any flaws in the writing and overplayed cliches are overshadowed by all the other positive aspects in the film. If you’re looking for a great date movie, this is it. Sweet, smart, and funny all in one. Not to mention all the great date ideas you’ll get watching Hitch work his magic.
