Date movie review - Good Luck Chuck
In Date movie review

Starring: Dane Cook, Jessica Alba Release Year: 2007

Our rating: (3.5/5)

The unrated version of Good Luck Chuck is a raunchy romantic comedy that hits (mostly) on the comedy, but not so much on the romance. Charlie Logan (Dane Cook) is a dentist whose star-crossed love life is due to a hex that was put on him when he was just a young boy. Every woman he sleeps with ends up finding love and getting married with the next guy they date. At the wedding of one of his exes he happens to meet the really sexy and unbelievably clumsy Cam Wexler (Jessica Alba). While Cam constantly rebuffs Charlie’s constant advances, Charlie starts to put his supposed hex to the test with hilarious (and very raunchy) results. After finally convincing Cam to go on a date with him, Charlie does all he can to prevent sleeping with her since he doesn’t want to see her slip away and fall in love with someone else. With Charlie acting up, Cam starts to keep her distance and Charlie’s chance of breaking the hex seems out of reach.

Good Luck Chuck is a decent comedy, but might be a little misleading to most people looking for a sweet romantic comedy. The unrated DVD version is fairly explicit, so if you enjoy that type of comedy (like I do most of the time) it will bring quite a few laughs. The plot is unrealistic but fun, and while the writing succumbs to some of the predictable dating movie situations, there are more than enough surprising moments to keep the film moving along. Dane Cook delivers a solid performance, but those looking for the potency of his stand-up comedy will probably be a little disappointed. Jessica Alba does a great job as the hot chick in the movie, but her acting is questionable.

There are some really funny moments in Good Luck Chuck and it’s a pretty good movie to see with a bunch of friends, but it doesn’t make for a great date movie.  The raunchy moments might make for some awkward first dates, even if the comedy will put smiles on your faces from time to time.  I think the biggest issue that holds the movie back is the lack of emotional connection you get with the characters.  Usually you feel for the main character, but Charlie’s character lacks a little depth and that makes it harder to root for him.  If you take the film for what it is, it does a decent job of delivering the goods.  But as a romantic comedy, it’s a little lacking on the romance.
